Maine Firefighters Honored at Memorial
Updated On: Apr 12, 2014
Brothers and Sisters,
On Saturday September 21,  the names of 157 brothers and sisters of the IAFF who have died in the line of duty, were placed on the wall of the Fallen Firefighter Memorial in Colorado Springs. The IAFF members being honored this year died in the line of duty between June 1, 2012, and June 1, 2013. In addition, IAFF members who died prior to June 1, 2012, but were reported during the past year, also will be honored.
Three of those names, Brother Gerard Martel of Sanford Local 1624, Brother Frank Cowan of Portland Local 740 and Brother Michael Murphy of South Portland Local 1476 will be among them. The families of these professional Maine firefighters were presented with the IAFF flag at the services by members of the respective Locals who are on hand to honor their brothers.
Every year in September the IAFF holds this very moving Memorial to those in our union who made the ultimate sacrifice. It is also a reminder to the loved ones of our fallen comrades that they are part of the larger family of firefighters and paramedics across the United States and Canada. Being a part of that family means that we will always be there for them and that their loss is our loss.
Please take a moment to look over the links below about the Memorial and to view the short video that goes through the ceremony, it brings home the meaning of the day.
Stay well and be safe,
